What does the 2021 CanneSeries festival have in store for us, from “Validated” to “Gomorrah”?
The 4th edition of the Cannes festival dedicated to works from the small screen, which will take place on the Croisette from 8 to 13 October, will highlight popular hits such as Validé but also indie series. Its jury is chaired by the star of Games of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.
After a blank year under the sign of restrictions due to Covid-19, Cannes is once again vibrating to the rhythm of festivals. In July, the world was ecstatic at the discovery of nuggets of the 7th art, including Titanium and Julie (in 12 chapters). And this autumn, series lovers will meet on the Croisette to discover a preview of content selected by the organizers of CanneSeries, a festival that has been running for four years.
Taking place just after the Lille event Series Mania, whose jury chaired by the Israeli Hagai Levi Dedicated, among others, to the actress Ariane Labed and the comedy series by Agnès Hurstel Jeune and Golri, the Cannes festival plans an eclectic program, which honors popular hits such as
Validé
(the original Canal+ series by Franck Gastambide) but also indie series. The three main sections, including competition, short series and the out-of-competition category, bring together names that are already well established as well as newcomers. We find the last season of Gomorrah (out of competition), the series adapted from Roberto Saviano, but also Limbo… hasta que lo decida (competition), co-created by Argentinian director Gaston Duprat – whose latest film, Competencia official, was in the running for the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival. The series, which promises to be a satire of the Argentine bourgeoisie, rivals Totems, a French program rooted in the Cold War with Niels Schneider in the title role. The jury is chaired by Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, while the short series jury is made up of Aisling Bea (This Way Up), Ten Percent actor Assaad Bouab and Marie Papillon. Connie Britton (American Horror Story, The White Lotus) will receive the Variety Icon Award for Lifetime Achievement.
The CanneSeries festival will take place in Cannes from October 8 to 13.
